Today we visited East Riddlesden Hall which is a National Trust place near to our home. We haven't been here since last year and we had intended to go to fly a kite in the wind but we found a wonderful children's area in the gardens. I am always impressed with the way the National Trust make an effort to include young children. They had created a fantastic Mud Pie Kitchen.
Included was a bucket of compost, various containers and other kitchen utensils, some watering cans and pots to make mud pies in. Also, some herbs and plants nearby, some shells.
It was the kind of thing you could very easily set up at home. Just use stuff you have in the kitchen.
The children dived straight in mixing some herbs and grass into the compost and adding water.
They made a lovely pie each which we left with other children's creations.
Both children really enjoyed this and we will definitely be setting up something similar at home soon. To find out what we created at home click here.

Thanks for the inspiration :)
Hi Helen. I work as an outdoor play advocate/consultant across England and Wales and have an ongoing personal campaign to help generate a mud kitchen in every early years setting in the land! I live in Sheffield and would love to know where you are. I have a book too that promotes mud play (Playing and Learning Outdoors by Jan White, Routledge 2008). Have you seen 'Mud Pies and other recipes' available from Amazon for £7? It's wonderful (originally written in the 1960's).
ReplyDeleteI am in Bradford - not too far from you! We now have a Mud Kitchen at our nursery which is also in Bradford. Thank you for the information, will certainly take a look. Thanks for getting in touch, it's always nice to hear from other like minded people.
